When you issue a customs transit declaration and it is not finalised correctly, the consequences can be significant for both the principal and the customs agent. Finalisation occurs when the customs office of destination receives the goods and electronically notifies the customs office of departure that the transit has been successfully completed. If this does not happen within the specified time limit, the transit remains pending closure.
The consequences of failing to finalise the transit include an investigation by Customs. They will attempt to locate the consignment and finalise the transit. Failure to provide evidence that the consignment arrived correctly may be interpreted by Customs as an attempt to evade customs clearance and thereby avoid paying VAT and duties.
The guarantee linked to the transit may be called upon in full or in part to cover the resulting customs and tax debt. Penalties may be imposed for customs non-compliance.
