What should a freight forwarder offer you apart from the price?

What should a freight forwarder offer you apart from the price?

International freight is about much more than simply moving goods from one place to another. The difference lies in how each operation is planned, coordinated and managed.

Transparency on costs – A good decision starts with a clear quotation. It is important to know what is included in the transport price and which costs may be invoiced separately. (Costs at origin and destination, handling and storage, customs clearance and inland transport.) The aim: to avoid surprises and compare proposals using equivalent criteria.

Coordination of the entire operation. Your goods pass through various hands. Good coordination is essential to ensure that each stage proceeds as planned. (Management and coordination of suppliers and carriers; liaison with agents at origin and destination; coordination of port or airport operations; organisation of collections, deliveries and intermodal connections.) The result: a more organised operation and fewer scattered administrative tasks for your team.

Information and tracking. It is not enough simply to know that the goods have been dispatched. You also need to know their status and be aware of any relevant changes. (Information on possible changes to lead times, notifications of incidents that may affect delivery.) Logistics visibility helps you plan and make decisions with greater confidence.

Documentation and customs advice. Documentation is an essential part of any international operation. Anticipating requirements can help to avoid errors and delays. (Review of commercial and transport documentation; coordination of customs clearance, where applicable; guidance on Incoterms and logistical responsibilities.) Every operation has its own specific characteristics. That is why it is essential to understand the requirements applicable to the goods and the destination market.

Ability to respond to incidents. In logistics, not everything goes to plan. Delays, inspections, route changes or documentation issues may arise. It is not a question of promising that there will never be any problems, but of knowing how to manage them when they do occur.

Solutions tailored to your business. Every company has different logistics needs. An urgent consignment does not require the same solution as a high-volume shipment planned well in advance. To find the most suitable option, it is important to assess: the type, weight and volume of the goods; the origin, destination and delivery time; and the frequency of shipments. The aim is to find a solution that aligns with your company’s priorities.

Don’t choose based on price alone. Choose based on the value it brings. Good logistics management can help you forecast costs, coordinate your operations more effectively and have the information you need to make decisions.
